Russian Orloff once considered its origin as Russia but it has been substantiated the breed actually originated in Persia in the 17th century then later it was dispersed into Europe and Asia. Count Alexei Orlov whom bred chickens, pigeons and the Orlov Trotter, a very popular horse in Russia. He bred and promoted the breed, and it became known as the Russian Orloff, possibly descending from Gilan and Malay breeds of chickens. The Russian Orloff today is a rare breed and is listed by the Livestock Conservancy as “Critically Endangered” The Orloff has a unique game bird look, thick feathered, walnut comb, small earlobes and walnuts making it very winter hardy. The bird is calm with easy going temperaments, and good layers of light brown eggs.
